Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an AI filmmaking startup founded by actor Ben Affleck in 2022. The startup, which operated in stealth mode until now, develops advanced AI tools designed to assist filmmakers during post-production. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, Ben Affleck will continue to serve as a senior advisor to Netflix, and the entire InterPositive staff will join the streaming giant.
InterPositive focuses on building AI models derived from a film’s daily footage, enabling creative professionals to perform tasks like color mixing, relighting shots, and adding visual effects more efficiently. Unlike generative AI based on text prompts, this technology emphasizes enhancing existing footage while keeping filmmakers actively involved in the creative process. Netflix has emphasized that their aim is to keep creators at the center of production and will offer the startup’s tools to its creative partners without plans for commercial sales.
Ben Affleck initiated the company after noting early attempts at AI in production often fell short of industry needs. He highlighted the importance of human judgment in storytelling, which AI cannot replace. Affleck believes preserving the art of storytelling requires deep experience and skill, which only humans can provide. This thoughtful stance suggests the startup’s technology is designed to complement creative talent rather than replace it.
Netflix has already explored generative AI applications in its shows, using the technology for visual effects and experimenting with AI to make advertisements more targeted.
