BMW’s latest electric vehicle, the new i3 sedan prototype, recently underwent rigorous testing on icy terrain in Sweden. Showcasing cutting-edge technology and impressive power, the vehicle promises to mark a significant step forward for BMW’s EV lineup.

Evolution of the i3 Model

BMW previously launched an electric i3 hatchback in 2013, which gained a following but did not revolutionize the EV market. The new i3 revives the name with a fresh approach: an electric sedan built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform.

The Neue Klasse is BMW’s modern architecture developed from the ground up to offer better driving dynamics, faster charging, and greater affordability. This new platform also underpins the iX3 SUV and incorporates innovations in battery technology and electronics.

Innovative Powertrain and Handling

The prototype i3 tested, dubbed the i3 50 xDrive, features a powerful dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque. This setup aids both acceleration and vehicle control on slippery surfaces.

BMW’s “Heart of Joy” electronic system integrates brake actuators and motor controllers, enhancing coordination between traction control and ABS systems. On the ice, this allowed smooth, controlled braking predominantly through regenerative systems, with minimal physical brake use.

Performance on the Ice

Driving on glare ice, the i3 demonstrated superior stability and agility. The system intelligently modulates power distribution between front and rear motors, providing strong acceleration even in low-traction conditions. This allows confident cornering with minimal risk of losing control.

Drivers can also disable stability controls for a sportier experience. In this mode, the car maintains enough electronic assistance to prevent spins, while enabling controlled drifting and more engaging handling.

Panoramic Vision Display and Interior Features

BMW introduced its Panoramic Vision display in this prototype, a massive windshield-spanning screen replacing the traditional gauge cluster. Despite concerns about potential distraction, the customizable layout allows drivers to select which information to view or simplify the display for less clutter.

The prototype’s interior remains largely covered due to its developmental stage, but the integration of the Panoramic Vision display alongside a central touchscreen aims to enhance user experience, though the traditional rotary iDrive control has been removed.

Outlook and Expectations

BMW has scheduled the official debut of the new i3 for March 18. The company has yet to announce pricing or final design details, but early impressions suggest the vehicle could be a compelling addition to the electric sedan category if it balances performance, technology, and aesthetics effectively.

The i3’s combination of innovative battery design, state-of-the-art electronics, and refined handling indicate BMW’s determination to produce a noteworthy EV in a highly competitive market.
